The Obama administration is pressuring Congress to ease the potential impact of crippling sanctions on Iran’s Central Bank, arguing that the restrictions will drive up oil prices and wind up being a boon for Tehran and its pursuit of a nuclear weapon.
In a plea to House and Senate negotiators writing a broad defense bill, the administration has asked for substantive changes to a provision that would target foreign financial institutions that do business with the Central Bank of Iran, including a six-month delay for all the penalties.

The web-based “embassy” went online Tuesday with versions in English and Farsi explaining why the administration has chosen a virtual diplomatic mission to further expand its effort to reach out to Iranians even as President Barack Obama’s attempts to engage the government in Tehran over its nuclear program have yet to succeed.
Earlier this year, the State Department launched a Farsi-language Twitter account and Facebook page aimed at providing news to Iranians about US government policies and encouraging feedback. The virtual embassy is intended to compliment the social media sites.
